Organic food can be expensive compared to conventionally grown food. Sometimes we have to optimize our spending by prioritizing which foods we buy organic and which foods we are okay with eating non-organic.

The “Food Dirty Dozen” is a good trick for remembering which foods you should always try to buy organic.

The Food Dirty Dozen is a list of 12 foods that you should only buy organic due to the amount of pesticides or agrochemicals used in conventional growing methods. Every year, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) publishes this list of fruits and vegetables to support consumers to know their source.

Adhering to the Food Dirty Dozen is a good way to optimize your organic food intake and expenditure.

The Food Dirty Dozen:

  1. Strawberries
  2. Spinach
  3. Kale
  4. Nectarines
  5. Apples
  6. Grapes
  7. Peaches
  8. Cherries
  9. Pears
  10. Tomatoes
  11. Celery
  12. Potatoes

If you buy any of these fruits or vegetables non-organic, a good rule of thumb is to always peel the skin before eating.
